Here we go again. Maybe, maybe not.
Here we go again. Maybe, maybe not.
Leg four of the Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series — the Skins Marlin Derby — is arguably the quintessential Big Fish tournament of the world.
However, like the Kona Throw Down that saw 26 “rats” tagged before a big fish was caught, the Skins has started off with another full day of action, but again, all “rats”.
With almost double the teams (17 vs. 31), statistically we shouldn’t have to wait all the way to the last hour of the last day for a big fish. Unfortunately, marlin don’t read statistics.
Friday’s “Skin” money of $24,800 pushes to Day 2, just like the golf skins does if a hole is not won.
The largest marlin over 500 pounds caught Saturday will walk away, “winner take all”.
If no one catches a marlin 500 pounds or better Saturday, all three days skins — a total of $74,400 — will be up for grabs for the largest marlin over 500 pounds on the third day. If no one catches one over 500 by the end of the third day, the purse will be paid to the team with the most points.
Teams score points with tag and release of “rats” at 200 points per. Marlin over 400 pounds can be weighed in for 1 point per pound, but they must weigh 500 pounds or more to claim a “skin”.
Is the Skins the quintessential “big marlin” tournament of the world?
We shall find out.
